Al.com: Mo Brooks gets Senate endorsement from powerful congressman

July 21, 2017

The chair of a House committee that oversees NASA on Friday endorsed U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks’ candidacy in the state’s Senate Republican primary.

U.S. Rep. Lamar Smith, R-Texas, is chair of the Science, Space & Technology Committee.

He is at least the third member of Congress to endorse Brooks, R-Huntsville, in the Aug. 15 GOP primary.

“Congressman Brooks is smart, honest and conservative,” Smith said at a news conference at Huntsville International Airport. “That is a powerful combination.”

Before the midday announcement, Brooks accompanied Smith on a tour of Marshall Space Flight Center at Redstone Arsenal.

“Congressman Brooks has been an active and valued member of the Science, Space & Technology Committee,” Smith said. “He has been a strong advocate for our space program. And he represents Alabama with hard work, integrity and conviction.”

Brooks has previously been endorsed by North Carolina Congressman Mark Meadows -chair of the conservative House Freedom Caucus – as well as U.S. Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Saks.

In an interview with AL.com, Smith also said that he was the first member of Congress to donate to President Trump’s election campaign and was the first member of Congress to donate to Brooks’ Senate campaign.

Smith said that he “very, very rarely” gives political endorsements in primary races and that Brooks did not ask him for an endorsement.

“This is unusual,” Smith said. “But then again, Mo Brooks is an unusually good, strong candidate. I have no hesitation at all.”

Smith described Brooks as a strong supporter of Trump’s agenda – a criticism Brooks has received in political ads supporting U.S. Sen. Luther Strange in the primary election which allege that Brooks is not a supporter of the president.

“Mo embodies and supports so much of the president’s agenda, he has a 100 percent voting record supporting the president’s issues. The president wants to clean up the swamp, Mo Brooks wants to clean up the swamp. They’re going the same direction. Trump is a strong supporter of space, strong fiscal conservative and wants to reform government.

“I just feel very strongly that having supported Donald Trump, it’s very easy for me also to support Mo Brooks. There should be no doubt in anyone’s mind that Mo Brooks in the Senate will support the president’s agenda.”

Endorsements from colleagues in Congress are strong testimonies, Brooks said.

“These are people who know first-hand that it is false when Luther Strange claims I support (House Minority Leader) Nancy Pelosi,” Brooks said. “These are people who know it is false when Luther Strange claims I am weak on border security or a border wall. It’s always important to have eye witnesses who know the true facts.”
